Week 5
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection
We are told
in the Gospel that when the time came
for Jesus to be taken up to heaven,
He resolutely took the road to Jerusalem.
As He travelled along, He encountered
people who were interested in following
Him for each of them there was a precondition:
‘I will follow but first let
me say good-bye to people at home’
or ‘I will follow but first
let me go and bury my father’.
In his response, Jesus makes it clear
that we should not put anything before
His summons to His kingdom. He calls
us to live in a new way, a higher
way and the present moment is always
the right moment to respond to His
invitation. His words challenge us
to let go of the things in our lives
that we often put in front of our
relationship with Him. God calls us
to put His kingdom first in our lives.
We are to love Him above all.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Q. What
did Jesus mean when he told a man
to leave the dead bury their dead?
Many years ago we learnt that burying
the dead was one of the corporate
works of mercy.
A. Jesus said that
to a man who expressed a wish to follow
him but only after burying his father.
It wasn’t as if the funeral
was today or tomorrow. He invited
the man:”your duty is to go
and spread the good news of the kingdom
of God.” Jesus had set his face
resolutely towards Jerusalem and the
inevitable conflict there. He challenged
the resoluteness of some would-be
followers. It would demand sacrifice.
Wishful thing must be translated into
practical action.
First Friday
Friday is the first Friday of the
month. Father Boland, Father Sweeney
and Father Murray will visit the sick

Father McElhennon will do his visits

Me in virtue of my Passion

Kitchen Prayer
Lord of pots and pans and things
since I have not time to be
A saint by doing lovely things
Or watching late with Thee
Or dreaming in the dawn light
Or storming heaven’s gates,
Make me a saint by getting meals
And washing up the plates.
Although I must have Martha’s
hands
I have a Mary mind.
And when I black the boots and shoes
Thy sandals, Lord I find.
I think of how they trod the earth,
What time I scrub the floor
Accept this meditation Lord
I Haven’t time for more.

An AUGUST SAINT - 1 July :
Saint Oliver Plunkett ( 1625-1681
)
Oliver was born into an Irish noble
family and studied for the priesthood
in Rome, where he was ordained in
1654. He was Professor of Theology
in Rome from 1654-1669 when he was
appointed Archbishop of Armagh. Because
of the Penal Laws he had to minister
in secret. He was arrested and tried
at Dundalk for conspiring against
the state. Transferred to Newgate
prison in England, he was charged
with high treason for ‘promoting
the Catholic faith’ and was
condemned to a gruesome death at Tyburn.
He was the last Catholic to die for
the faith at Tyburn and the first
of the Irish martyrs to be beatified.
In 1975 he was declared a saint.

Prayer Before Exams
Dear Father, Source
of all wisdom,
help me to use my time and my intelligence
wisely
as I prepare for exams.
Help me to dispose myself to listen
to your Holy Spirit
so that you, as my loving Father,
may place me in a state of prayer
and lead me to understand
that the supreme wisdom
is knowing I am your child.
Help me to remain serene
so that my work may truly reflect
this profound truth
Mary, Mother of my spiritual life,
guide me in the ways of your Son,
so that my work may help
to transform this world for His glory.
Amen
Praying...and Waiting...and
Patience
Let us ponder for a moment
Life's three seasons:
Praying...and waiting...and patience.
Life's unpredictable seasons.
The season of praying,
When we bring our concerns and worries
And lay them at Jesus' feet.
Crying out for God's help in our time
of need.
The season of waiting,
When our timing is so much different
than God's.
When we think we have waited too long
And yet there is more waiting to be
done.
The season of patience,
When waiting and patience meet.
You cannot have one without the other.
They must go hand-in-hand.
Welcome prayer...and waiting...and
patience
For we know God is teaching us
And using them for our good
To bring about His perfect will for
our lives.
