Cappagh Parish News
(Vol .32 No 5) 3rd February 2008

Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Lent begins this week. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Ashes will be distributed after all the Masses. During Lent there will be an extra Mass from Monday to Friday at 7.45am in St Mary’s Church Killyclogher. As the church is due to close on Sunday 10th February, the 7.45am Mass will be celebrated in the Cappagh Parish Centre from Monday 11th February.

The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession.

St Vincent de Paul:
The members of the aforementioned Society wish to thank the people of the parish most sincerely for their tremendous help and support over the Christmas period. We were overwhelmed by the outstanding response to the Special Collections, Carol Service and Christmas Tree and Holly Wreath sale. We would like to express our gratitude for the very generous personal and businesses contributions and the great effort made by the children attending the local schools. Finally our appreciation also goes to everyone who volunteered their services over the busy period and the people who contribute to our weekly Sunday collection throughout the year.

Divine Mercy Prayer Group, St Mary’s Killyclogher meet the first Sunday of every month at 3pm. (This is an open prayer group and all are welcome to come and pray.) At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony: This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world. I will allow you to enter into My mortal sorrow. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of me in virtue of my Passion.

A number of people have expressed an interest in purchasing one of the seats being removed from the church. We have now decided to put them up for sale and put any revenue into the development fund. The shorter seats are priced at £25 and the longer ones are £50. If you are interested, please contact the parish office.
