Fourth
Sunday of Easter
Our
Good Shepherd

Jesus said:
“I am the Good Shepherd;
I know my own and my own know me.”
On this Sunday the Year of Vocations
ends. What has this special year meant
for you personally, for you as a family
and for you as a parish community?
For many it quite possibly has meant
very little and yet it has been significant.
We take for granted that there will
always be priests to serve us with
the Eucharist and religious to take
the initiative in our social needs.
Recent years have provided us with
a very different reality and a very
new challenge. In our response to
Christ the Good Shepherd we are all
called to make our homes places of
his presence for the world. We can
only do this through the confident
ways we make our love for one another
shine out and our faith in him be
seen by those around us. And we need
to make our faith community a place
that attracts the attention of those
around us. The Lord will then provide
what is needed for the Eucharist and
for leadership for a better world.

Doherty, C.Ss.R.
Touching
Life Story.
A young man was getting
ready to graduate from college. For
many months he had admired a beautiful
sports car in a dealer’s showroom,
and knowing that his father could
well afford it, he told him that was
all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached,
the young man awaited signs that his
father had purchased the car.
Finally, on the morning
of his graduation his father called
him into his private study. His father
told him how proud he was to have
such a fine son, and told him how
much he loved him. He handed his son
a beautiful wrapped box. Curious,
but somewhat disappointed the young
man opened the box and found a lovely,
leather bound Bible. Angrily, he raised
his voice at his father and said,
“With all your money you give
me a Bible?” and stormed out
of the house, leaving the holy book.
Many years passed
and the young man was very successful
in business. He had a beautiful home
and wonderful family, but realised
his father was very old, and thought
perhaps he should go to him. He had
not seen him since that graduation
day. Before he could make arrangements,
he received a telegram telling him
his father had passed away, and willed
all his possessions to his son. He
needed to come home immediately and
take care of things.
When he arrived at
his father’s house, sudden sadness
and regret filled his heart. He began
to search his father’s important
papers and saw the still new Bible,
just as he had left it years ago.
With tears, he opened the Bible and
began to turn the pages. As he read
the words, a car key dropped from
an envelope taped behind the Bible.
It had a tag with the dealer’s
name, the same dealer who had the
sports car he had desired. On the
tag was the date of his graduation,
and the words….PAID IN FULL.
How many times do we
miss God’s blessings because
they are not packaged as we expected?

Questions
people ask
Q. Every now and then I think I have
a vocation from God to be a priest.
What should I do about it?
A. Talk
about it to a priest, preferably one
who knows you, and pray to the Holy
Spirit for guidance. Every diocese
and religious order organises Vocation
Days to help people to discern their
calling. A vocation to priesthood
is a grace given to an individual
for the service of the church-community.
Basic requirements of a genuine vocation
to priesthood would include a desire
to commit one’s life to God
and the service of people, a sound
faith, regular Mass attendance and
prayer, the ability to co-operate
with others and being willing to obey
authority.
