Parish News
(Vol.33 No 01) - 4th January 2009
The
Second Sunday of Christmas

Christ,
the Wisdom of God.
“The
Word was made flesh, he lived among
us, and we saw his glory.”
It is the beginning of a new calendar
year and I am thinking of all the
wonderful married couples that I have
met over many years of my priesthood.
Thank you for being the hope of the
Church and the world simply through
your love for one another. It is said
that the ‘the glory of God is
humanity fully alive’. That
is found in a very special way in
your committed love in marriage and
this new year is a really good time
to renew your love and set out to
make this year 2009 a time of joy
and gladness for one another and for
all of us. At this time of New Year’s
resolutions it would be to the glory
of God and the good of all if we were
to make the health and well-being
of marriage and family life our main
concern this year, as couples, as
families, and as a parish community.
What could you put in place that would
help this?
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.
As
many of you are already aware
Father Gerry has been seconded
to Claudy for a short period. Bishop
Hegarty would like him to provide
cover there while Father Michael McEldowney
is recuperating after an illness.
Initially we understand a period of
four weeks has been mentioned but
this may be reviewed depending on
how things develop. We take this opportunity
to wish Father Sweeney every success
in this new venture and wish Father
McEldowney a speedy recovery so that
we may have Father Sweeney back with
us in Cappagh in the very near future.
During a Papal audience,
a business man approached the Pope
and made this offer: Change the last
line of the Lord's prayer from "give
us this day our daily bread"
to "give us this day our daily
chicken." and KFC will donate
10 million dollars to Catholic charities.
The Pope declined. Two weeks later
the man approached the Pope again.
This time with a 50 million dollar
offer. Again the Pope declined. A
month later the man offers 100 million,
this time the Pope accepts. At a meeting
of the Cardinals, The Pope announces
his decision in the good news/bad
news format.
The good
news is... that we have 100 million
dollars for charities.
The bad news is that we lost the Wonder
Bread account!

Questions
people ask
Q. ‘In the beginning
was the word.’ How may I understand
the poetic prologue of John’s
gospel?
A. The focus of
John is on the divine origin of Jesus.
He develops the coming of Jesus in
five stages. Jesus is identified as
the eternal Word, truly divine, before
any creation. Then in the act of creation
the Word of God calls things into
being. The Word was the source of
light in the revelation of God through
the prophets. When Jesus was born
of Mary, the Word was made flesh.
In his mission, Jesus is the inviting
Word: ‘To all who accepted him
he gave the power to become
children of God.’

Pope delivers
New Year message
Pope Benedict is
appealing for solidarity worldwide
to fight global poverty made worse
by the financial crisis. The Pontiff
delivered a traditional New Year prayer
for peace during mass at St Peter’s
Basilica. He challenged world leaders
to make major changes to the global
financial system, saying short-term
answers were not sufficient. He also
reiterated his call for an end to
the conflict in Gaza and said the
international community should come
forward with concrete proposals so
that Israelis and Palestinians could
live in peace, security and dignity.
