Cappagh Parish News

(Vol.33 No 41) - Sunday, 4th October 2009

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Jesus said to the Pharisees – when talking to them about marriage and divorce: ‘They are no longer two therefore, but one body.’ A phenomenon, and one of the very sad features of our world today, is the number of marriages that break down. And we should have the greatest reverence for and compassion towards those people who are in this situation. However the challenge for us is to keep faith in marriage and to reverence the institution of marriage as a vitally important part of God’s plan for our humanity and as one of the sacraments of the Church. Marriage is under all kinds of pressure. It needs to also have all kinds of support from all of us whether we are married or not so that every couple will be encouraged to aim for and work towards the best possible marriage and not settle for mediocrity in their love.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

DAY FOR LIFE (4th OCTOBER)

Day for Life - the day dedicated to celebrating the dignity of life from conception to natural death - will this year focus on suicide. There are around 6,000 deaths by suicide in Ireland and the UK each year. In recent years this figure has been falling, except in Northern Ireland and Wales. Suicidal thoughts are not uncommon but most people do not act on these thoughts and feelings of despair. For some, these emotions may happen after experiencing a bereavement, relationship breakdown, the loss of a job, financial pressures or following emotional or sexual abuse. For others, it is a profound fear that they will be unable to cope with whatever has disturbed their peace of mind.

Sometimes these thoughts occur without any apparent reason. People suffering from clinical depression or people who are dependant on drugs or alcohol are most likely to try to take their own lives. They may need specialist medical and psychosocial care either in the hospital or in the community. Sometimes they may have little insight into their condition and urgent specialist help will need to be requested by a family member, friend or colleague. Some people who are terminally ill or severely disabled may feel their life is no longer worth living, even that they are a burden to their family. Others fear that they will experience great suffering in dying. What is needed is a response of love and care by family, friends and the wider community, and the assistance that good palliative care can offer. Assisted suicide is illegal and a change in the law would place pressure on vulnerable people including those who are elderly, disabled, depressed, terminally or chronically ill - to request assisted suicide.

Sometimes suicidal feelings may arise from a sense of loss or abandonment by God. Prayer, opportunities for spiritual conversation and the support of family and the parish community are very important. If you are concerned about someone with suicidal feelings call the Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90 or consult your GP. Your local parish and parish priest will be able to offer pastoral and social support.

‘DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME’ is a programme for the parents and primary 4 children who are preparing for First Holy Communion. The first ‘Do this in Memory Mass’ will take place in Christ the King Church at 12 noon on October 11th. As this programme involves all the schools in the parish it is anticipated that there will be a large crowd at this Mass. While everyone is most welcome to come along, it might be advisable if some of you could go to another Mass on that day to avoid overcrowding.

Mission Sunday takes place on the 18th October.

The theme for this year’s mission month is “Reach out”. The Church devotes the month of October to pray especially for our missionaries all over the world. We are all very generous with our donations to the missions but we must remember that they also need our prayers.

KNOT AGAIN!

At times some of our relationships seem to have us in knots. Just thinking of certain people (e.g. partners, ex-partners, teenage children, work colleagues) can produce recurring feelings of stress, resentment, hurt, anger or fear. This can affect our well-being, self-esteem, family, work and health. Based on the work of Byron Katie this workshop will interest you if you want to learn a way to untie these knots and bring more peace into your life. Tutor: Tony Carlin has over 25 years experience as a facilitator both at home and abroad Venue: Pastoral Centre, Letterkenny Dates and Times: Sat/ Sun 10th and 11th Oct 09 - 9.30 to 4.30 each day Cost: €90 To reserve a place or for further information’Email: tony.carlin@btinternet.com Telephone: 00447843587757
