14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Come to me and I will give you rest

“Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest.” How we need to hear that word from Christ today and to heed it. We have never had so many time saving devices that should make life more enjoyable for us. And yet we have never been so busy! People find it so difficult to relax and be thankful for all the wonderful things of life. Our world needs the witness of people who are willing to take time for their love relationships in ways that say that this is the most important part of life. We give this witness just by taking the time for the Sunday Mass but it is so important to really take the time and not just rush in and out again. We give this witness by married couples taking time regularly for their relationship, especially by doing courses that will help them grow in love. We give this witness when parents give good time regularly to their children instead of having others look after them all the time.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Please note that the Friday night Mass in the Cappagh Parish Centre will be discontinued during July and August. The last Friday night Mass will be celebrated on July 4th and will resume on Friday September 5th .

The Cracked Pot

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, which hung on the ends of a pole, that she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walks from the stream, to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.

But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house”. The old woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side?”.

“That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them”.

“For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the

house”.

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it’s the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

Parish Missal Readings (Year 1) p 312 & Proper p 1068

First Reading Zechariah 9: 9-10
The Messianic king is portrayed, not as a proud warrior, but as a humble and gentle champion of peace for all peoples.

Second Reading Romans 8: 9. 11-13
St Paul contrasts life in the Spirit with life in the flesh.

Gospel Matthew 11: 25-30
Jesus reveals the Father to those who are ‘little’ and lightens the burdens of those who are humble.

Questions people ask

Q. What is meant by shoulder my yoke?

A. A yoke was a piece of wood laid across the shoulders of animals to harness them together and hitch them to a plough or cart. In the Bible it was a symbol of oppression and slavery; or it referred to any painful burden such as suffering. Jesus, coming from a carpentry background knew about fitting a yoke to the contours of particular animals to make it less burdensome. As carpenter-turned-saviour, he promised that our burdens would be lighter if we would imitate his gentleness and humility of heart.
