(Vol.33 No 50) - Sunday, 6th December 2009

Second Sunday in Advent

Jesus said to his disciples: "hold your heads high, for your liberation is close at hand". Over the past few years, with all the revelations of scandals in the Church and society, there is a lot for us to be ashamed of and repent for. However, the resulting despair that some people have experienced is not necessary because there continues to be so much goodness in the Church and society that we can be proud of. This week we begin a new year in our journey of faith with Christ. It is an opportunity to once again have confidence in his presence with us, and his power in us. Without in any way being unrealistic, this is a time to look towards him to save us and to set us free. We will find that freedom in how we are with one another in our homes and in our parish community as we approach Christmas and beyond with love rather than selfishness.

What do the Advent candles stand for?

Candles symbolise the light of God coming into the world through the birth of His son, Jesus. The four traditional advent themes for the four advent Sundays are:

1. God’s people - The Candle of Hope. Hope is like a candle shining in a dark place.

2. The Old testament prophets - The Candle of Peace. As we look at this candle we celebrate the peace we find in Jesus Christ.

3. John the Baptist - The Candle of Love. As we look at the light of this candle we celebrate the love we have in Christ.

4. Mary the mother of Jesus - The candle of Joy. As we look at this candle we celebrate the joy we find in Jesus Christ.

The fifth candle represents the birth of Christ. The flame of this candle remind us that He is the light of the world and that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness, but will have the true light of life.
