23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reflection
‘O
that today you would listen to his
voice. Harden not your hearts!’
From a spiritual point of view, hardness
of heart is one of the worst things
that can happen to anyone. To adopt
a hardhearted attitude is to maim
oneself. A hard heart can’t
feel, can’t respond, can’t
love. A hard heart can’t experience
joy. A hard heart is a closed heart.
A soft heart, on the other hand, is
a blessing. A soft heart can receive
and can respond. It can be saddened
but it can also be deliriously happy.
Softened by the rain of God’s
grace, and warmed by the sun of his
love, the human heart can be turned
from a desert into a garden.

Twenty-third
Sunday in Ordinary Time
Parish Missal Readings
(Year 1) p 347 & Proper p 1086
First Reading
Ezekiel 33: 7-9
The appointed leaders hear the responsibility
to point out to wrong-doers the error
of their ways and to try to get them
to reform.
Second Reading
Romans 13: 8-10
If we truly loved our neighbours we
would not harm them in any way.
Gospel Matthew
18: 15-20
We hear about the
duty a Christian has to correct an
erring brother and sister. But there
is a proper way of doing it.
Satan-In-Law
One bright, beautiful
Sunday morning, everyone in the tiny
Midwest town got up early and went
to the local church. Before the services
started, the townspeople were sitting
in their pews. Suddenly, Satan appeared
at the front of the church. Everyone
started screaming and running for
the entrance, trampling each other
in a frantic effort to get away from
an evil incarnate. Soon everyone was
evacuated from the church, except
for one elderly gentleman who sat
calmly in his pew, not moving seemingly
oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate
enemy was in his presence. Now this
confused and irritated the Devil a
bit, so he walked up to the man and
said, "Don't you know who I am?"
"Yep, sure do," the elderly
man said. Satan asked, "Aren't
you afraid of me?" This time
the man said, "Nope, sure ain't!"
Satan, a little more perturbed at
this, asked, "Why aren't you
afraid of me?" The man calmly
replied,
"Been
married to your sister for 56 years."
