(Vol.32 No 46) - 9th November 2008
32nd
Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Dedication
of the Lateran Basilica
Jesus answered the
Jews: “Destroy this sanctuary
and in three days I will raise it
up.” ‘But he was speaking
of the sanctuary that was his body’.
Buildings are a very important part
of every aspect of human life. They
provide shelter. They give dignity
to people. They give people a place
where they can feel at home. But when
a building becomes more important
than the people themselves it loses
its meaning. In the practice of our
Christian faith our buildings are
also very important, and we are blessed
to have so many beautiful places of
worship in our communities as well
as worldwide. But, beautiful and all
as these might be, they have to be
at the service of the dignity of every
human person. Our churches have to
be places where people can feel at
home because of the care they experience
there. That can only happen when we
are working at building a community
of care. And our homes have to be
at the service of love for each person
who lives there. That is true reverence
for the presence of Christ.
Fr. Johnny
Doherty, C.Ss.R.
The Church of St John on the Lateran
is 'Mother and Head of all
the churches of the City and the World'.
It is the cathedral church of the
Bishop of Rome, and was called 'St
John' alter the two monasteries once
attached, dedicated to St John the
Divine and St John the Baptist. It
is however dedicated to the Most Holy
Saviour.

The Dedication
of the Lateran Basilica
First Reading
Ezekiel 47: 1-2, 8-9
The power of the presence of God radiates
throughout creation.
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 3: 9-11, 16-17
For St Paul the preaching of the Gospel
is the laying of the foundation: Christ.
Gospel John
2: 13-22
The Temple, or the Church building
is a reminder of the presence of God
among us.

In Remembrance
You can shed tears that they are gone
Or you can smile because they lived
You can close your eyes
And pray that they’ll come back
Or you can open your eyes
And see all they’ve left
Your heart can
be empty
Because you can’t see them
Or you can be full of the love they
shared.
You can turn back
on tomorrow
And live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow
Because of yesterday.
You can remember
them
And only that they’re gone,
Or you can cherish their memory
And let it live on.
You can cry and
close your mind,
Be empty and turn back
Or you can do what they’d want
Smile, Open your Eyes,
Love and Go on.
