The Baptism of Jesus

“You are my Son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Those wonderful words, spoken to Jesus on the occasion of his Baptism in the Jordan, are spoken to each one of us because of our baptism into him. Just listen to God speak those words from his heart into your heart now: “you are my daughter, my son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Our major task is to live out that love of God in our vocation. For you as a couple committed in love, make your life together full of the joy of God’s love. Single people, religious, priests, live out the same vocation of love in different ways but for the same purpose, to fill the world with the presence and the love of God. As a community of faith, the parish is a gathering of all these vocations so that, working with one another, we can radiate that same love to all those around us.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

A Vision for the Future of our Parish

In eight weeks time we will be celebrating the re-dedication of our Parish Church. St Mary’s Church has been a much loved place of worship and prayer for many generations in our Parish, and our hope and prayer is that it will continue to be so for many generations to come.

Although our Church building is important and lies at the heart of our parish community, there is something more important – we as God’s people, we are the Body of Christ – we are much more important than any building. St Paul reminds us that “You are God’s building” (1 Cor 3:9). It is not only bricks and mortar that makes a church, but people. St Paul also tells us that God has given us gifts and talents so that we might all work together to build people up, to build a supportive and loving community, “to knit God's holy people together to build up the Body of Christ” (Eph 4:12).

It is not just the responsibility of the priest alone to do this work, but it is our shared duty. As we all know there is a growing shortage of priests. Within the next ten years it is very likely that there will be only two (and possibly just one) priest in this parish. It is therefore very important that we prepare now so that we are in better shape to face the future with fewer priests.

At this time when we are preparing for the re-dedication of our parish church it is fitting that we also begin the process of preparing our parish to face the challenges of the future.

On Wednesday 21 January we are organising a ‘parish conversation’ as a first step in putting in place a pastoral strategy for the future. The evening will be facilitated by Mr Martin Kennedy, who as a layman has worked in pastoral ministry for many years. He has a wealth of experience in helping parishes put structures in place to meet their pastoral needs.

It is our hope, that over the coming months we will have a Pastoral Council in place and a vision for the future that will call upon the gifts and talents of all of us so that together we will build up the Body of Christ here in Cappagh. We hope to have structures in place that will reach out to the youth in our parish, to those alienated from the Church, to the sick, the weak and vulnerable. We hope to work at creating more enriching and meaningful liturgies and deepening the spirituality and religious knowledge of everyone in our parish. These and more ideas will be shared and discussed at the meeting on 21 January.

You are very welcome to come along to this ‘conversation evening’ on 21 January in the Cappagh Parish which will last from 7 - 9.30pm.
