Pentecost Sunday

Receive
the Holy Spirit
“As the Father
sent me, so I am sending you.”
As we celebrate Pentecost, it is important
to remember what it is about. The
Holy Spirit is given to us, not as
a possession, but as a power. And
this power is one that can transform
the world. We are given the power
of love, which is invested in a special
way in the various important relationships
of our lives. That power of God is
there in the sacrament of marriage,
calling couples to love for the sake
of the world. The power of love is
in our families, making our homes
the Domestic Church to the glory of
God. And it is this power of God’s
Spirit that is at the heart of every
parish. All we have to do is practise
that power and great things will happen
all around us. There can be no doubt
that great things need to be made
happen in our world today. Receive
the Holy Spirit.

Questions people ask
Q.
Saint John says that
the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles
on Easter Sunday whereas Saint Luke
says it was Pentecost, fifty days
later. Any explanation?
A.
Neither writer intends to specify
a calendar date but chooses a day
of symbolic meaning. John celebrates
the coming of the Holy Spirit as the
first day of the mission of the Church.
‘As the Father sent me, I send
you.’ The mission of Jesus and
then of the Church were empowered
by the Spirit. Luke uses the harvest
festival at Pentecost, when people
of many languages were in Jerusalem,
to express the universal mission of
the Church. First day or fiftieth?
Both are true, each expressing a different
aspect of the Spirit in the Church.

PRAY FOR PRIESTS
Last year the diocese published a
prayer card with the names of all
the Derry diocesan priests. Many of
you have these cards and every day
a specific priest is named. This week
we ask you to pray for the following
priests:
Fr Patrick Baker Monday 12th May
Fr. Declan Boland Tuesday 13th May
Fr. Eugene Boland Wednesday 14th May
Fr. Francis Bradley Thursday 15th
May
Fr. Manus Bradley Friday 16th May
Fr. Shane Bradley Saturday 17th May
Fr. Brian Brady Sunday 18th May
You are invited to a community
prayer & healing service
in Omagh Methodist Church on Sunday
11th at 7 pm. Special speaker: Brother
David Jardine (Divine Healing ministries
Belfast).
Lepra have acknowledged
receipt of £7.162 which they
collected outside Cappagh Parish Centre
and Christ the King churches last
weekend. This money is sufficient
to cure 341 people from leprosy. Unfortunately
due to lack of manpower it was impossible
to collect outside Knockmoyle or Mountfield
but if anyone would like to donate,
it is not too late. There are so many
ills in the modern world that we cannot
cure but if we consider that £21
is all it takes to cure one person
from leprosy, a disease that most
of us thought was a thing of the past,
we know our money has been put to
great use.
