(Vol.33 No 42) - Sunday, 11th October 2009

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Emigration Sunday.

The rich young man said to Jesus: 'Good Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Many people today live as if everything can be bought, even God's favour. We might not think of this just in terms of buying with money but with duty, with doing what we have to and then God somehow is in our debt. The way of Jesus is that eternal life can only be accomplished through love - first of all God's love for us, which is freely given, and then our love for God and for one another. This way of love means giving up a lot of selfishness and self-preoccupation just as the rich young man in the Gospel had to give up his riches before he could even begin to see what following Jesus was about. The guarantee though is that it is more than worth all our effort as this way of love brings happiness in this life and eternal happiness with God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

First Reading Wisdom 7: 7-11
This is a passage in praise of wisdom. It is presented as a speech of Solomon.

God’s word is effective and is a source of true wisdom for us.

Gospel Mark 10: 17-30

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE

We are planning a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land next year (dates not decided yet - probably early June) led by Fr Kevin McElhennon. For 10 days we will follow in the footsteps of Jesus from Nazareth to the Sea of Galilee to Bethlehem and Jerusalem. This once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage will bring to life the people, places and stories of the Bible, and promises to be an enjoyable and enriching experience. Price: £1,190 (price may be less depending on numbers going and is fully inclusive - flights, hotels, breakfast & dinner each day, guide, full tours etc). If you are interested or thinking about going and would like to know more about the pilgrimage, come along to either of the information evenings this Monday (Oct 12) or Wednesday (Oct 14) in Christ the King Church, Strathroy at 8pm (after 7.30pm Mass). Or contact Fr Kevin directly at 028-82251055. See advert below "Footprints of God"

"Footprints of God"

Fr Kevin McElhennon will lead a series of reflection evenings from February - April entitled "In The Footprints of God". These evenings are offered to everyone who would like to journey reflectively through the Gospel stories. By reflecting on the Gospel stories, and getting to know the people and places of the Gospels, we hope to deepen our faith and enrich our relationship with Jesus. Though open to everyone, these reflections will be especially beneficial for anyone who is intending to join us on our Holy land Pilgrimage as it is hoped that these reflections will enhance our experience and enjoyment of the Holy Land.

Details of our planned Advent Reflection evenings will be published in a couple of weeks

Pope John Paul II

"To go in a spirit of prayer from one place to another, from one city to another, especially in pilgrimage to holy places and venerable shrines, helps us not only to live our life as a journey, but also gives us a vivid sense of a God who has gone before us and leads us on, who himself set out on man’s path, a God who does not look down on us from on high, but who became our travelling companion. I say it to everyone: let us set out in the footsteps of Christ!"

It has been brought to our attention that there is a certain amount of vandalism taking place in Killyclogher graveyard with graves being desecrated. This is most distressing for the relatives of the deceased. We would appeal to those involved to have respect for the graveyard which is consecrated ground.
