The Baptism Of Our Lord

Reflection

Baptism is both a gift and a commission. Through baptism, God’s favour rests on us, and at the same time He calls us to service to him and to each other. As we grow and mature, we should become ever more conscious of what the demands of service involve.

We have before us the example of Jesus himself, the ultimate Servant. As Son, Beloved and Favoured of God the Father, he fulfilled the demands of service to the point of laying down his life.

May the Spirit of God which we first received at Baptism help us too to be generous in the sacrifices we make for the good of others.

First Reading Isaiah 42: 1-4.6-7
The mission of the Messiah to bring justice and freedom.

Second Reading Acts of the Apostles
The Good News of Jesus Christ is for all people.

Gospel Matthew : 13-17
The Spirit of God comes down upon Jesus.

The Family Rosary
By Maureen Beeney
We gathered in the kitchen every night
for my mother to give out the rosary
as was her great delight,
we children shoved and pushed and made
an awful lot of noise
before she got us quietened
then we began, our tribute to the
Mother of God.
My father said a decade, then we all
got our turn,
soon with the rosary finished
mother’s trimmings would begin,
a prayer for someone sick in hospital,
and for relations near and far,
so many people too numerous to mention
came under my mother‘s care.
To us children, the family rosary
became our way of life,
in the changing times, as the years
went on, we found reassurance in
this prayer each night.
Now both my mother and my father
have gone to live with God,
but if I close my eyes, once more, I see,
the gatherings in the kitchen,
to spend a while with God.
