(Vol.33 No 7) - Sunday, 14th February 2010

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fixing his eyes on his disciples Jesus said: “How happy are you who are poor; yours is the kingdom of God. Alas for you who are rich; you are having your consolation now”. Isn’t this a very difficult teaching to accept, even when we know that it comes from Jesus? And because it is difficult, we can tend to ignore it and go on our way. Obviously Jesus is not promoting poverty. Rather he is saying that when we are poor we know that we depend on God. When we have riches we put our trust in them even though in reality we still depend totally on God for everything including our next breath. The task of every human person is to let go of our self-importance and enter into the wonderful love relationship God wants to have with us. We will then use our resources, material and spiritual, for the well-being of each other.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Day of Prayer for Temperance

First Reading : Jeremiah 17: 5-8
The prophet contrasts the life of the wicked with the life of the righteous.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12: 16-20
St Paul stresses the reality of Jesus’ bodily resurrection, and the meaning of that resurrection for Christians.

Gospel: Luke 6: 17, 20-26
The Gospel passage assures us there is only one set of guidelines worth heeding.

Lent begins this week on Ash Wednesday. It is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Ashes will be distributed after all the Masses. During Lent there will be an extra Mass from Monday to Friday at 7.45am in St Mary’s Church Killyclogher. Masses for Ash Wednesday are as follows: 7.45 am in Killyclogher; 10.00 am in Killyclogher; 10.00 am in Knockmoyle; 7.30 pm CTK; 8.00pm Mountfield and 8.00 pm in Knockmoyle.

Change to the Vigil Mass Time in St. Mary’s Church Killyclogher. It has been decided to move the 8.30 Vigil Mass back an hour to 7.30pm. This is a result of feedback from parishioners who feel that 8.30pm is too late. The 7.30pm Mass will begin on 6th March. The original idea of this late Mass was to facilitate the nurses but this is no longer an issue. If you have booked an anniversary Mass for 8.30pm it will automatically move to 7.30pm.

Please collect your Trócaire boxes from the porches this weekend. “We have reached a shameful point in our history. More people now live in hunger and poverty.” (Justin Kilcullen, Director of Trócaire). Please give generously.

The Footprints of God

A Retreat for Lent

Church of Christ the King, Strathroy

Monday Evenings - 8 – 9 pm

(Tea, coffee served at the end of each evening)

Each Monday evening of Lent (beginning on Monday before Ash Wednesday), we will journey reflectively with Jesus as he makes his way to Jerusalem.

As we reflect on the journey Jesus took to Jerusalem, where he suffered and died for us, we grow in an understanding of the journey of our own lives and find nourishment and guidance for our pilgrimage through life.

... Join us as we walk in the Footprints of God …
