Cappagh Parish News
(Vol .31 No 45 ) 16th December 2007 - Psalter: Week 3

Third Sunday of Advent

Reflection

The gospel for this weekend finds John the Baptist in his prison cell wondering about the authenticity of Jesus. Doubts had begun to enter his mind and so he instructs his followers to go to Jesus and ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or have we got to wait for someone else?’ Jesus for his part points to the evidence of his miracles – the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised to life and so he adds: ‘Happy the man who does not lose faith in me.’

With us all there can be times when faith wavers and we like John feel unsure. Doubts can cloud our hearts and deprive us of a clear understanding in relation to our faith. We can be impatient, like John, for things to be revealed and the work of God to be accomplished. What John had to understand as indeed what we all will have to come to terms with is that we must give God the freedom to act in his own time and in his own way. God works in simple, hidden and humble ways. This demands patience and trust on our part.

A special evening of music, singing and dancing was held on Friday 14th December in Dun Uladh, Ballinamullan to celebrate the 90th birthday of Charles McMenamin, Beltany. Relations, friends and neighbours travelled to congratulate Charlie. We hope that Charlie will enjoy many more years of good health and happiness.

There will be a party night in Dun Uladh on Thursday 20th December for the dance class. Everyone is very welcome.

Diocesan Commision for Justice and Social Affairs
During the year Bishop Hegarty set up a Diocesan Commission for Justice and Social Affairs, with the key aim to raise awareness of the social teaching of the Church. The committee will attempt to articulate our responsibility as concerned Christians in the modern world, with reference to key issues such as poverty, migration, family and marriage, violence in society, pro-life issues, global warming, and dealing with the conflict of the past, to name a few. Throughout the coming year we will offer some reflection on a number of these issues.

Cappagh Parish Pilgrimage to Rome & Assisi will take place August 29th - September 5th 2008 led by Fr Eugene Boland and Fr Francis Bradley. Price: £700 (B&B) .

"Each year, God asks us to shed one more coat of awareness, one more dream state and come alive to the vision of God’s plan for each of us and the world-at-large.
"The older we get, the harder this is to do. As children we had a sense of wonder. Our eyes were wide open and drinking in the fascinating gifts we beheld…Our thirsty souls could not have enough of the wonders of creation.
"Then, somehow, we grew too old to dream. We tired of the abundance of the world, or at least grew weary of keeping up with the feast of life, and stepped away from the banquet of life.
"The natural gift of wonder God gave us as children was meant to be kept alive.…Instead we let wonder go to sleep. We entered the typical dream state of most humans.
"Why else does Jesus tell us today, ‘Stay awake!’…Advent says, ‘Wake up and realize the gifts of love you have received.’
"…Psychology says, ‘Let go.’ Spirituality says, ‘Wake up.’ In both cases there is a withdrawal from the busyness of daily life (our dream state) and a waking up to the subconscious and spiritual depths of ourselves."
