St Valentine.
Valentine was a physician and priest
in Rome in the third century. He assisted
the martyrs during the Christian persecution
under Claudius 11, who ordered all
Romans to worship all the gods, under
punishment of death. Valentine was
arrested and imprisoned for his Christian
faith in the One God. He tried, unsuccessfully,
to convert the emperor, who condemned
him to death on February 14, 270 A.D.
While imprisoned, Valentine converted
his jailer by restoring the sight
of the jailer’s daughter, Julia.
On the eve of his death, Valentine
wrote a note to Julia, telling her
to stay close to God. He signed it,
from your Valentine.” In 496
A.D., Pope Gelasius marked February
14th as a celebration in honour of
his martyrdom. In 1836, Pope Gregory
XV1 gave the body of St. Valentine
to the Carmelites for their newly
built Church of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel on Whitefriars Street in Dublin,
Eire, where he is venerated to this
day. On St. Valentine’s Day,
messages of affection and love are
exchanged around the world.
