Cappagh Parish News

(Vol.33 No 43) - Sunday, 18th October 2009

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Anyone who wants to be great among you must be the servant of all’. We often think that people are being fully accepted by us when we treat them like one of the family. And it is a lovely way to be. But the opposite is also very important to practise, namely that we would treat one another in our families the way we treat those who are visiting us. In this situation we take great care to be ready for them; we get all the best implements out for them; we prepare good food for them. And when they are gone we sometimes are relieved but more often than not we talk about the good things that we can see in them. This is also true within a parish community. We should take great care of one another, the way we would if there was a group of very special visitors coming to celebrate with us. That is how Christ wants us to be together.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R

29th Sunday of the Year

Mission Sunday

First Reading Isaiah 53;10-11

By his sufferings shall my servant justify many, taking faults on himself.

Second Reading Acts 13:46-49
I have made you a light for the nations.

Gospel Mark 10:42-45
Anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant.

Freefall

There were four people all on a small plane together. An hour into the plane flight the pilot announced that the plane was going down and that everyone would need to jump and then he put on his parachute and jumped leaving only three parachutes for the four passengers.

The first passenger to grab a parachute was a doctor who explained that he was on he verge of discovering a cure for cancer; therefore, he was clearly the most important passenger. That said, he jumped out of the doomed plane. The second passenger claimed to be the smartest man in the world. "Surely you wouldn't want the smartest man in the world to go down with the plane" he explained, and he jumped too.

The only two passengers left were a Boy Scout and a priest. The priest told the young boy that he had lived a good life and was ready to die, so the boy should take the parachute and jump to safety. The Boy Scout calmly answered,

"Don't worry. There are still two parachutes left. 'The smartest man in the world' just jumped out of the plane with my backpack."

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE:

We are planning a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land next year (dates not decided yet - probably early June) led by Fr Kevin McElhennon. For 10 days we will follow in the footsteps of Jesus from Nazareth to the Sea of Galilee to Bethlehem and Jerusalem. This once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage will bring to life the people, places and stories of the Bible, and promises to be an enjoyable and enriching experience. Price: £1,190 (price may be less depending on numbers going and is fully inclusive - flights, hotels, breakfast & dinner each day, guide, full tours etc). If you are interested or thinking about going and would like to know more about the pilgrimage, come along to either of the information evenings this Monday (Oct 19) or Wednesday (Oct 21) in Christ the King Church, Strathroy at 8pm (after 7.30pm Mass). Or contact Fr Kevin directly at 028-82251055.

The theme for this year’s Mission Sunday is ’Reach Out with Love’: World Mission Sunday encourages prayer and financial support for the mission outreach of the Catholic Church in a world where millions are thirsting to hear of God’s love for them and longing for the light of Christ in their lives.

The total amount raised was £628. The weekly dancing class raised £250 bringing the total to £878 which was given to the fundraising effort.

Independent Literacy Centres: Opportunity for Individuals to run their own Computer Based Literacy Programme for children and adults with Dyslexia and other learning difficulties. We would like to appeal to parishioners not to park on the footpath outside Killyclogher Church. There is a ramp to enable wheelchair users to cross the road and if it is blocked it causes them great distress. It is probably lack of thought but just be grateful that you are capable of walking and spare a thought for those who are not so lucky.

The cleaners in Christ the King Church have asked that we mention that some people are putting chewing gum on the ground and it is getting embedded in the carpet. This is very difficult to remove.

Last week’s Collection £3,388. Thank you.
