First
Sunday in Lent
“Jesus
was led by the spirit through the
wilderness and was tempted there by
the devil for forty days.”
As we begin Lent, we are put in touch
with the basic temptations of human
life that can lead us to disaster.
The first of these is pride. This
does not mean thinking well of ourselves
but rather thinking of ourselves as
the only and most important thing
in our lives. During this time we
are invited to sort out our priorities
once again. The second temptation
is to power that makes us want to
prove that we are better than others.
The only power we should exercise
as followers of Christ is the power
of love through which we forget ourselves,
die to ourselves so that others may
have life. And Lent is also a time
to change our ways of life that are
not in accordance with God’s
ways as the third temptation is presumption.
God does respect our choices and rewards
and punishes us accordingly.
Fr. Johnny
Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Sunday, 21st
February 2010
1st Sunday
of Lent
First Reading
: Deuteronomy 26: 4-10
The Lord heard our voice and saw our
misery, our toil and our oppression.
Second Reading:
Romans 10: 8-13
If your lips confess that Jesus is
Lord and if you believe in your heart
that God raised him from the dead,
then you will be saved.
Gospel: Luke
4: 1-13
You must worship the Lord your God,
and serve God alone.

Giving
something up
For most older Catholics, the first
thought that Lent brings to mind is
giving something up. In our childhood,
the standard was to give up sweets,
a discipline that found suitable reward
in the baskets of sugary treats we
received at Easter. Some of us even
added to the Easter surplus by saving
sweets all through Lent, stockpiling
what we would have eaten had we not
promised to give it up.
Some years ago someone urged their
children to move beyond giving up
sweets to giving up some habit of
sin that marked their lives. About
halfway through Lent he asked the
children how they were doing with
their Lenten promise. One of his young
sons had promised to give up fighting
with his brothers and sisters during
Lent. When his father asked him how
it was going, the boy replied, "I'm
doing pretty good, Dad—but boy,
I can't wait until Easter
That response indicates that this
boy had only partly understood the
purpose of Lenten "giving up."
Lent is about conversion, turning
our lives more completely over to
Christ and his way of life. That always
involves giving up sin in some form.
The goal is not just to abstain from
sin for the duration of Lent but to
root sin out of our lives forever.
Conversion means leaving behind an
old way of living and acting in order
to embrace new life in Christ. For
catechumens, Lent is a period intended
to bring their initial conversion
to completion.

Church
of Christ the King, Strathroy
Monday Evenings - 8 –
9 pm
(Tea, coffee served at the end of
each evening)
Each Monday evening
of Lent (beginning on Monday before
Ash Wednesday), we will journey reflectively
with Jesus as he makes his way to
Jerusalem.
As we reflect on the
journey Jesus took to Jerusalem, where
he suffered and died for us, we grow
in an understanding of the journey
of our own lives and find nourishment
and guidance for our pilgrimage through
life.
