Parish News
(Vol.33 No 04) - 25th January 2009
The
3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The
Ways of the Lord.
“Follow
me and I will make you into fishers
of people.” Those words
of Jesus, which are given to us for
this week, are usually thought of
as being addressed to people with
a vocation to the priesthood or religious
life. They are about vocation certainly
but are addressed to each of us. The
four great vocations in the Church
are single life, married life, religious
life and priesthood. All of us who
are baptised are living one of those
and each of us is vital to the health
of the whole body, the Church. We
live our vocations in different ways
but to the same end, the salvation
of the world. Our task is to discover
how to live our own vocation to the
full. This means discovering how to
make our love radiate out to those
around us. We begin in our homes with
those who are closest to us. Then
we can reach out to the world around
us. When we are with Christ and following
him love will be the characteristic
of our lives.
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

On the week beginning
26 January 2009, the Catholic Church
in Ireland will celebrate Catholic
Schools Week 2009 with the theme Catholic
Schools - A Vision for life. The focus
of this week is how to implement the
themes raised by the Pastoral Letter
of the Irish Bishops’ Conference
Vision 08 - A Vision for Catholic
Education. Pope Benedict in his address
to the Catholic University of America
stated that education is central to
and constitutive of the mission of
the Church: ‘Education is integral
to the mission of the Church to proclaim
the Good News...God’s revelation
offers every generation the opportunity
to discover the ultimate truth about
its own life and the goal of history.
This task is never easy; it involves
the entire Christian community and
motivates each generation of Christian
educators to ensure that the power
of God’s truth permeates every
dimension of the institutions they
serve. The aim of all Christian education
is to lead the believer to an adult
faith that can form him/her into a
‘new creation’; capable
of bearing witness in their surroundings
to the Christian hope that inspires
them. This aim goes to the core of
the identity of the Catholic school
and raises the question of conviction:
Is the faith tangible in our schools?
’Religious Education, prayer
and worship form an essential part
of the curriculum, functioning at
its core. Such learning is founded
on faith and inspired by wonder at
the transcendent mystery of God revealed
in the complex beauty of the universe.’
