The
Holy Family

“Meanwhile
the child grew to maturity and he
was filled with wisdom; and God’s
favour was with him”.
It is always fascinating to watch
children growing up. Each small stage
is filled with wonder. It doesn’t
take long for each child to begin
to show his/her own individuality
and special gifts. This is what happened
with Jesus also. Mary and Joseph had
to go through all the emotions of
parents everywhere, wondering how
this boy was going to turn out. They
worried about him. In today’s
world, hildren growing up have to
contend with so much that get in the
way of their true development. Many
are being drawn away from the practice
of their faith and any real knowledge
of God’s love, much to the distress
of their parents and grandparents.
It is only by working together as
parents, as couples, as community,
that we can hand on this most valuable
gift of faith. Make your home a place
of love and prayer. And make your
faith community a place of joy and
welcome and God’s favour.

Parish
Priest’s New Year Message.
On behalf of Father Murray, Father
McElhennon, Father Sweeney and myself
I would like to express our deep gratitude
for your wonderful kindness to us
at Christmas and throughout the year.
It is our privilege to serve you in
the parish, walking with you on your
journey in all the joys and sorrows
of life. Your deep faith and commitment
continues to be an inspiration to
us, reminding us that we are all called
to the one vocation, loving God and
one another.
As we begin another
new year, we are so looking forward
to the re-opening of St. Mary’s
Church on March 15th. The work has
been progressing very satisfactorily
and is on schedule to be completed
by the end of February. Many have
commented favourably on how well the
exterior looks now that the scaffolding
has been removed. The Cappagh Parish
Centre has worked out very well but
it will be a particular blessing to
have Mass again in St. Mary’s
Church.
Unfortunately, the
financial situation in the parish
is depressing. We appreciate that
with the present economic climate
the coming year is going to be very
difficult for many of our parishioners
but with God’s help and the
power of prayer we will all help each
other and we will see the light at
the end of the tunnel.
Finally
I would like to take this opportunity
to wish all our parishioners a very
happy and blessed and holy new year.

Questions
people ask
Q. Is there any historical
evidence of the flight of the holy
family into Egypt?
A. The
only source is the Gospel of Matthew.
Documents of the reign of Herod have
no mention of the edict to kill the
children in Bethlehem, although such
an action would not have been out
of character. In his first two chapters
Matthew’s purpose is to portray
Jesus as fulfilling many Old Testament
figures. Egypt links Jesus with Moses,
born there at a time when Pharaoh
decreed the killing of the male children
of the Hebrews. Matthew may have taken
liberty with historical facts so as
to portray Jesus as the new Moses
and agent of the new covenant.
