Trinity Sunday

Jesus said to his disciples: “I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever.” As we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Church it is good to ask the questions: How do we let the Spirit be actively present? and, How do we exclude the Spirit? We should ask these questions in the two contexts of our homes and our faith community. The Spirit is present when we are at peace with one another; the Spirit is absent when we are divided. The Spirit is present when we are living in joy; the Spirit is absent when we are settling for dullness. The Spirit is present when we are being creative and changing; the Spirit is absent when we are trying to keep things the way they always were. The Spirit is present especially when we are building relationships of love in our homes and parish.

The Most Holy Trinity

First Reading: Proverbs 8: 22-31
This reading in praise of the wisdom of God can be seen as a groping towards the
revelation of the mystery of the Trinity.

Second Reading: Romans 5: 1-5
Christ made possible for us a relationship of love with God.
This gives us the hope and sustains us in time of suffering.
The Holy Spirit helps us to recognise God’s love for us.

Gospel: John 16: 12-15
The Holy Spirit helps the Church to grasp the full meaning of all Jesus said,
especially what he said about the Father.

A Very Special Gift

Some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child used it all up to decorate an old box.

The next morning the little girl brought the box to her father and said, “Happy Birthday Daddy! This is for you!” He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty.

He said to her, “Don’t you know that when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside it?”

The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, ”Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.

It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us have been given a gold container filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, friends, family and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.
