17th
Sunday in Ordinary Time
“So
I (Jesus) say to you: ask and it
will be given to you; search and
you will find; knock and the door
will be opened to you.” The
greatest power that we have is undoubtedly
the power of prayer. And unfortunately
it’s a power that we don’t
use often enough. The three words
that Jesus uses here are dynamic
words that have to involve us at
a personal level. Ask: to do this
we have to decide what we are really
looking for in marriage and family
life as well as in our parish and
then we have to be willing to invest
ourselves in it. Search: if what
we are looking for is important
to us we will be willing to change
to find it and to change even more
having found it. So many people
want everything but without any
cost and this is not the way of
the Lord. Knock: God wants us to
come to him with confidence but
then to abandon ourselves into his
hands, knowing that we will be well
looked after.

Envy
Centuries ago in
the country of Greece there was a
young athlete who had so distinguished
himself in the public games that his
fellow citizens raised a statue in
his honour, to keep fresh the memory
of his victories. This statue so excited
the envy of another athlete who had
been defeated in the races, that one
night he went out under cover of darkness
with the intention of destroying that
statue and knocking it to pieces.
First he tried and tried to tip over
the statue. He tugged and pulled and
shoved... and after an hour it moved
just a little bit. This encouraged
him and he gave one mighty push and
the statue fell -- on top of him,
and killed him. Envy always harms
the one who is guilty of it.
Did it ever occur
to you that when you envy somebody
or you are jealous of somebody, that
this does not hurt that person in
any way... He or she does not feel
it at all... It only hurts you: it
eats your insides out... So, you see,
that it is a useless, self-destructive
exercise.

Questions
people ask
Q.
Years ago a priest told me I was
scrupulous and gave me a general formula
for confession. But this never leaves
me satisfied. Should I continue to
tell every sin in detail?
A.
If you suffer from scrupulosity which
is an obsessive-compulsive condition,
even the most detailed confession
would not satisfy you. Stay with the
general formula. God already knows
every detail and wants you to experience
the sacrament, not as a torture, but
as a celebration of his mercy.
